FIND YOUR PERFECT BOATING HOLIDAYS
SHANNON RIVER BOAT HIRE
Explore the Irish waterways and discover its secrets in a brand new way. These locations are remarkable regions for boating holidays in Ireland, now could be the time!
UPPER
SHANNON
The Upper Shannon is the busiest of the entire navigation system and you will find many activities for young and old alike, world class restaurants and lots of pubs, where you will find the music and craic that the Irish are famous for.
LOWER SHANNON
& LOUGH DERG
The Lower Shannon lazes through undulating lush countryside that is steeped in history as well as real Irish character. Life slows down along this stretch of the Shannon and boats pass less frequently – the noise of nature takes over once more.
ERNE RIVER

TESTIMONIALS
about Carrickcraft
It’s wonderful to be back on the water once again with Carrickcraft, after an enforced break. We were greeted and made to feel very welcome by the friendly staff at Bellanaleck who were most helpful and obliging. They are available to give comprehensive demonstrations, where required. A great deal of very useful information is available on net. Since our last visit Carrickcraft have added four additional types of boat at Bellanaleck, the Tyrone, Limerick, Leitrim Sixto and the Linssen. We hired the Linssen this time and were very impressed with the craft. Very comfortable for two, with en-suite bedrooms at the bow and stern, each with a separate shower, although it can sleep up to six. On site The Moorings Restaurant has reopened under new management. Excellent food and good craic. The Sunday BBQ is very reasonably priced and delicious.
We had the most amazing time. I was a little apprehensive heading off on my own with the children. With an age range from 10years to 18 there was a chance there would be a lot of squabbling. The cruise was exactly what a family like ours needs. We had a comprehensive tutorial from the staff at Carrickcraft before heading off so we were set up for success on that front. The nature of the activity meant that everyone had a job, whether it was charting the course, steering the craft, refilling when we docked, manning the locks. Everyone was kept so busy there was no time for fighting!!! My 16year old told me she felt her frontal lobe grow!! Lol. My 18 year old give me a long lasting hug and thanked me for such a great time. Something he hasn’t done since he was 12. I got strict instructions to book again and this time for longer. The staff at Carrick Craft were amazing. If I had their names I would cheer them personally, the girls at the desk, the men on the marina, the house keeping ladies who looked after the boat when we returned all fantastic!!! We will definitely be back!
I would like to extend a huge congratulations to you and your team for making our first ever boating weekend a huge success. From Jenny at the desk for her very warm and knowledgeable welcome, you made us feel very prepared for taking the cruiser out and Padraig and his excellent skill and instruction which enabled us to take our first boat out ourselves. The navigation of the water ways and lough where well explained, so too the suggested stops along the way. We had an absolute ball of a time and look forward to booking with you again next year.
FAQ
Do I need a license for a boating holiday in Ireland?
No, you do not need a license or any prior experience to enjoy a boating holiday in Ireland with Carrickcraft. We specialize in beginner-friendly rentals on the River Shannon and Lough Erne. Our team provides a comprehensive safety briefing and hands-on training at our marinas (Carrick-on-Shannon, Banagher, or Bellanaleck) before you set sail, ensuring you are fully confident as your own captain.
When is the best season for a Shannon River cruise?
The Irish cruising season runs from March to October. For the best weather and lively festival atmosphere in riverside villages, July and August are peak months. However, for travelers seeking tranquility and better value, the “shoulder months” of May, June, and September offer long daylight hours and stunning scenery. Carrickcraft boats are equipped with central heating, making even an early spring or late autumn trip very comfortable.
How much does it cost to hire a cruiser with Carrickcraft?
The cost of a cruising holiday in Ireland varies by boat model and season. Prices for a 3-night short break start around €550, while a full week can range from €800 to over €3,000 for our luxury Penichette class. When budgeting, remember to include the “fuel deposit” (usage-based) and optional extras like bike hire or pets. Booking in advance or during the low season is the best way to find affordable boating deals.
What is the ideal duration for a boating trip on the Shannon-Erne?
Most guests prefer a 7-night hire to fully explore the 500km of navigable waterways without rushing. A one-week itinerary allows you to travel from our Banagher base to Athlone or explore the vast beauty of Lough Derg and its historic islands. However, for a first-time experience, a 3 or 4-night short break is a great way to discover the Shannon-Erne Waterway.
What should I expect from life on board a Carrickcraft boat?
Life on board a Carrickcraft cruiser combines the freedom of a houseboat with the serenity of the water. Our fleet features self-catering amenities, including fully equipped galleys, hot showers, and comfortable cabins. Whether you are planning a family holiday or a getaway with friends, our boats provide an experience with the flexibility to moor at public jetties or private marinas across the Irish Lakelands.
